Make Every Day Mandela Day!

Today would have been Madiba’s 100th birthday. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, may not be with us in the flesh anymore, but his legacy lives on the lives of millions of people all around the world, especially in our beautiful South Africa.

To commemorate the 67 years that our beloved Madiba fought for social justice, Mandela Day is a global call to action to recognize that each individual has the power to change and make the world a better place. What are you doing for your 67 minutes today to be the change you want to see?

A small act of kindness can go such a long way. A few suggestions how you can do your part on this iconic day can be the following:

  1. Donate food or money to a charity that you are passionate about.
  2. Make food parcels to hand out to those in need. Even though you might not have 67 minutes in you busy day, a warm cup of soup for the friendly security guards at work or at your complex, won’t even take ten minutes of your time…
  3. Give clothing and blankets to charities that help those in need, especially in the bitter cold we hide away from every night in our warm beds.
  4. Offer your time to upliftment projects.
  5. Make a new friend, preferably someone from a different cultural background to you.
  6. Offer you love and time up to a local animal shelter – all the doggies and kitties need hugs and love and first prize would be a warm new home.
  7. You can help someone to get a job, by taking some time and putting together one killer CV for them and coaching them to nail an interview.
  8. Visit someone today – elderly people are often stuck into a hospice or old age home and forgotten about. Be their reason to smile today.
  9. Get tested for HIV and encourage your partner or a friend to do the same.
  10. Be kind to your co-workers today and treat everyone with the respect they deserve.

We will leave you with this thought on this very special day: “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived.  It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead” – Nelson Mandela
