Improve your worksheets and classroom with the right images

EducationEnvironmentTechnologyToolbox

When it comes to the worksheets you hand out in class and even the tests you give your students to do can always be improved with free images and clip art. Even presentations can serve your classroom better with the right choice of images.

The question is where do you find great free images and what formats should you use?

just-dont-do-itWell, let’s talk about formats first. Generally you want to use a .jpg or .jpeg but if the background is meant to be transparent then rather use .png because then it won’t interfere with the text in your document by covering it or obstructing it. Pay attention to the image you choose, if it has a white background or if it’s transparent because this will affect how you need to place it.

wrapping-textA key thing to remember is not to place an image behind text, if there is a lot of contrast to it or if it’s a busy image. Ideally, your text shouldn’t go over an image at all. If using Microsoft Word or Powerpoint then you can use tools like text wrap to make sure the text wraps around the image that you place.

So, where can you get free images? We’ve compiled a list of a few sites that you can use.

1. www.pixabay.com

Pixabay is great, used by many designers, teachers and anyone looking for great stock photos and clip art. It is completely free and you have the option to donate to the author of the image if you desire but that’s completely optional.

2. Openclipart.org

This is possibly the best of all the free clipart websites, with its well designed clipart easily scalable due to each of the files being SVG. Completely ad-free, this site is very easy to navigate and allows you to find what you need fast.

3. Wpclipart.com

With tens of thousands of images, this is one of the biggest directories of free clipart the web has to offer.

4. About.com

About.com has a wide variety of free clipart styles and genres and is also a great place to find seasonal clipart for those projects you are doing on holidays etc.

5. Clipartlord.com

This an awesome free clipart site because here they collect all the ‘best’ clipart from around the web and compile them into one huge collection. Some quality images can be found here.

6. School.discoveryeducation.com

This is an educational website and there are still hundreds of consistently excellent graphics available for download. All free clipart is made by the same designer.

7. Sweetclipart.com

A very simple site with a collection of simple but varied fee clipart images. However, the site’s simplicity makes it extremely easy to find an appropriate image for your project.

We hope this helps with creating awesome worksheets, workbooks, book covers and presentations! Remember… “The difference between something good and something great is attention to detail.” Charles R. Swindoll.
