There is no better feeling when your internal clock wakes you up and you can switch off that alarm and sleep in – the bliss of school holidays dear teachers! As much as you all deserve the fantastic break that has been haunting your dreams for months, bear in mind that you still need to build up those type 1 Personal Development points for the CPTD cycle. Just a quick reminder on what the type 1 activities are before we lend hand on the quick ‘how to’.
Type 1 activities:
Reading educational material in a variety of publications and from various sources.
Engaging in electronic media educational activities (webinars, viewing/listening to an educational programme, telematics.)
Attending relevant educational meetings/breakfast sessions (excluding the ones hosted by employers/Provincial Education Departments. Please note that employer-led meetings are reported under type 3 in terms of employer-led activities.)
Attending educational conferences/seminars/workshop sessions (excluding the employer/Provincial Education Departments driven ones.)
Mentoring and coaching other teachers.
Kick-starting/leading a community project.
Now that you have your brief reminder, we are all for assisting with the easy ones first!
Get reading! We know those novels gathering dust on your bookshelf is first priority, but why not dive into some other reading material and score those points? This doesn’t have to only be academic articles, like academic journals and periodicals that will interfere with wine ‘o clock, you can also include magazines, newspapers and blogs in your CPTD library. To log it you need to keep records on author, publication, date and what it was about.
Engage in electronic media. Who doesn’t like some horizontal time on the couch when it’s holiday time? Educational television programmes, podcasts, TEDtalks or completing an online assessment all count toward that all-important CPTD cycle. There are only two criteria, the activity should be 30 – 60 minutes, so the short TEDtalks is not going to work so well. Think more in the direction of programmes that is longer than a Game of Thrones episode. Keep a record of the link, date and time.
Initiating a new school/community project. While the project does not have to be directly linked to the school, it must add value to you as a teacher.
Matric marking. If you are appointed as a matric marker you can claim 5 points for the year and if you really run out of ideas and you don’t want to spring clean your house again, help the leaders of tomorrow and mark away!
Enjoy the last bit of school holidays and get cracking on those points. Follow the link to Eduvation’s very own FREE reading collection. You are just a click away from scoring big points and you can do it from the comfort of your warm and snuggly bed any time you want!
