How to make a difference – Mandela Day and every day

EducationEnvironmentTechnologyToolbox

The 18th of July is always a day that is very near and dear to every South African’s heart – Mandela Day. This commemorative day is recognised globally, but instead of only looking back and remembering Nelson Mandela for his brave fight for human rights, we all pay it forward in dedicating 67 minutes to giving back – just like he did. This year, we look to the 18th of July with heavy hearts as our beautiful country is currently crippled by the global Coronavirus pandemic, as well as political riots that are destroying hopes, dreams and livelihoods of thousands of South Africans.

It is more important than ever this year, that we stand together through the struggles and give back to those truly in need, while of course taking the necessary precautions when it comes to personal safety and COVID-19. If you really think about it, how easy is it to sit on your couch for 67 minutes and series-binge or just watch a movie? Why not use this time and especially in this challenging year, to do your bit?

– Assist with neighbourhood clean-ups where it is safe to do so. Everybody is struggling financially, but it takes nothing to grab a pair of gloves, a few black bags and make your neighbourhood a cleaner and safer area to live in.

– Some of us are very fortunate to have cupboards full of clothing to pick our outfits from daily. Why not raid your cupboards and donate old clothing to those in need? If you haven’t worn something for longer than six months, chances are that you never will. There is nothing more rewarding than giving!

– With the tragic state of affairs in our country at the moment, the elderly are very much at risk, not only because of the virus but also because they cannot go out to the shops to get what they need as it is too dangerous in some areas for them to do so. Why not send or deliver a care parcel with essentials, something warm to wear and some treats to make them feel special?

– Animals and children – soft spots for almost every single human being. Care packages and food donations are a wonderful way to contribute to the one without a true voice. As we all know, education is also a massive obstacle in our country and a lot of learners don’t even have access to basic sanitation, nevermind technology for online learning. Old laptops, phones or tablets can be a wonderful contribution to a school in need, along with a training course.

– We often drive around and see so many people begging on the streets. A warm meal can bring a smile to any person’s face. Pop down to your favourite takeaway spot and buy a few hot meals. Not only are you providing nutrition to those most in need, but you will also be supporting local businesses that are struggling to keep their heads above water with the current lockdown restrictions.

While it is important that we all contribute and dedicate our 67 minutes of giving back on Mandela Day, we need to remember that we need to make a difference every single day of our lives – whether it is volunteer work, financial contributions to a cause of your choice or simply a random act of kindness now and again. It is time that we all stand together and pick South Africa up out of the ashes after the madness has subsided. Our flag didn’t just burn, it was ripped off – but together we can be stronger. In the wise words of Nelson Mandela: “Difficulties break some men but make others. No axe is sharp enough to cut the soul of a sinner who keeps on trying, one armed with the hope that he will rise even in the end.”
