Online learning or e-learning can sound daunting. There are forums and databases and e-books and a myriad of words that can seem overwhelming at first glance. That said, online learning is here and here to stay. It is also hugely beneficial for the evolution of education in South Africa and the country’s relevance on a global scale.
We can say with confidence that it’s not as scary as it looks, having identified four of the biggest challenges and how to overcome them. Read on if you want some peace of mind about embarking on an online adventure to enhance your skills and knowledge as a teacher:
Challenge: “I’m scared there will be hidden costs that crop up”
Most of the time, studying online has a lower cost – making it more accessible to a wider range of people. Our courses have a once-off fee that is paid up front when you sign up for an online course. The only other foreseeable costs would be your own internet connection and computer.
Challenge: “I don’t know if I’ll be disciplined or motivated enough”
Online learning can be challenging, particularly if you have to balance work, family and other responsibilities. The environment you’ll be working in can also present a challenge of its own. However, here at The Eduvation Network, we provide the materials you need to complete the course at your own speed and wherever you feel most comfortable or productive – whether that’s at home, school or your local coffee shop.
Our online courses are designed in such a way that the work is manageable and rewarding so you’ll want to make time to get it done. Another motivational factor is the fact that teachers are required to attain a certain number of CPTD points for SACE every year (read more about this here), and our courses are both SACE accredited and will count towards their total CPTD points.
Challenge: “I’ll never get to talk to my classmates”
Our Learner Management System allows you to interact with other people taking the course. This could be in the form of individual messages, forums discussions, webinars or live classroom events hosted by the facilitator. We believe in education through innovation and integration rather than isolation.
Challenge: “I really don’t know much about computers”
In 2016, technology is a major driver behind a lot of businesses and now education too. You don’t need to know a lot about computers to complete one of our courses successfully. You need basic knowledge, an internet connection and an eagerness to learn. However, if you do get stuck, one of our online facilitators will be able to help you. In fact, they are there to support you throughout the course.
Online learning doesn’t have to be a mountain to climb, instead think of it as a hill to train on. The course and the experience of learning online will equip you with skills to advance your professional education and also give you technical skills that you can use across the board.
