Brace Yourself – End of the Year is Here!

EducationEnvironmentTechnologyToolbox

Time sure flies when you are marking, shouting and losing your marbles one day at a time… As the saying goes – there is light at the end of the proverbial teaching tunnel. The last term of the year has finally decided to make its appearance! Time to use that last bit of juice in your tanks to end off with a magnificent bang! These ten tips will undoubtedly make you a better person:

  1. Make some new rules

Classroom management often gets tough this time of year, but inventing a new, silly rule can help kids refocus and keep kids on task. For example, you might establish a “rule” that everyone needs to lip sync to a favourite song while you walk down the hallway.

  1. Extra recess

Studies actually show that the more active kids are, the better they learn. A little extra time out of class never killed anybody and while you are at it, why not resume lessons outside? Fresh air = better brain capacity.

  1. Set a weekly goal

Each week before the end of school seems to get a little bit harder. To help with this, try setting a class goal such as “working through one module of revision every week.”

  1. Set a daily goal

Let’s not kid ourselves – weekly goals are sometimes as realistic as a class full of kids where none of them are on meds. So, try a daily goal instead. Example: “Today we will have no problems to keep our mouths shut for the first half an hour of the lesson.

  1. Start each day with inspiration

This is a good one to get kids involved. Have them research inspiring quotes from famous people and then let them take turns reciting new ones each day. Please just refrain from anything inspiring that comes out of Game of Thrones or Orange is the New Black…

  1. Stretch

Take a minute at least three times a day and get your students up to stretch their arms and legs. This is a little thing, but it can make a big difference.

  1. Rethink homework

Invite students to go on a walk and write down or draw what they see. Or ask them to research good movies or books that could keep them busy during the holidays.

  1. Jam to some music

Like the need to stretch, sometimes music can really be the big thing to hitting the reset button. Just make sure you don’t get them going on a Disturbed or Korn hit…

  1. Start a countdown calendar

Much like the advent calendars around the holidays, this is a positive way to look ahead. Instead of filling the calendar with edible treats, fill it with fun things to do each day. You can even make your own with little bottles of Vodka for your own motivation.

  1. Get extra red pens!

Ready, set, mark! Get those report comments in and make sure you start marking before those exam papers even get a chance to go cold!

I would like to end of with a special chorus for all teachers preparing for the end of the year…

“Wooooooooah, we’re half way there
Woah, livin’ on a prayer
Take my hand, we’ll make it I swear
Woah, livin’ on a prayer!”
