The CAPS curriculum requires teachers to cover a large amount of information in a short time. Research has shown that such a “mile wide but inch deep” approach is a leading cause of math anxiety among learners. What is needed is a complementary approach that teaches the principles of mathematical problem solving to allow learners and teachers to more easily adapt to unfamiliar problems and concepts. A practical methodology for solving maths problems will be presented, drawing, inter alia, on the concepts of algorithmic thinking among other tools.
